    The Return – (Chapter: One)

“Okay people, gather round and see if you can pick up some healing abilities through osmosis.”

Morris came around the corner and started handing charts to the other residents.

“From you?” Pratt had just discharged his last patient and was heading out into the morning sun.

“Of course from me. Who else around here has my clinical skills and way with patients?”

    “Fortunately no one.”

As the voice hit his ears, Morris was sure his testicles had leapt up into his body. Pratt smiled and nodded goodbye as the Chief Resident cringed. How had he missed the familiar tap of the crutch?

“Has it been a month already?” He whispered to Abby Lockhart. She nodded yes and moved aside to let Kerry Weaver examine the board. “Dr. Weaver, it is always such a pleasure to have you down here with us. I look forward to these days when you role up your sleeves and dive into …”

“Can it, Morris,” she said curtly, before turning a more affable gaze towards Abby. “Dr. Lockhart, run the board.”

“LOL in exam two. Near miss falling down the stair and hurt her wrist grabbing the rail. We’re still waiting on her films. 30-year-old male in sutures. Sliced his finger cutting a bagel. Luka is in with a 32-year-old female with possible appendicitis. And we’ve got a 10-year-old male puker who apparently snuck down to the kitchen in the middle of the night and polished off a quarter of a pizza, half a carton of ice cream and one of Dad’s beers,” Abby finished reading from the boy’s chart.

Weaver took the chart from her hand and handed it to Morris. “Dr. Morris, it sounds like this boy could use some of your amazing medical abilities. He’s all yours. Neela take the sutures and tell him to get one of those bagel holder things so we don’t have to see him again. Abby, the wrist is yours when the films come back.”

She turned back to Morris only to see him standing with his mouth agape. “Now Morris!”

“You like doing that to him, don’t you?” Abby asked her as they watched him scuttle off towards the retching 10-year-old.

“It’s one of my favorite parts about coming down here.”

They both chuckled a little, but then Sam Taggert interrupted.

“Dr. Weaver, possible MI in route. About 3 minutes out.”

“Thanks Sam. Abby you’re with me.”

The two doctors headed out to the ambulance bay to await the patient’s arrival.

“Do you miss it, working down here?” Abby asked Kerry.

“Some days. I miss treating patients. And God, I hate meetings.”

“We all hate Morris you know.”

“I know, but you’ll do better. And if you don’t apply for Chief Resident I’ll personally come down here and beat you with this crutch.”

Abby smiled at the vote of confidence as the ambulance pulled into the bay. The paramedics leaped out of the vehicle and began removing the gurney.

    “56-year-old male. Shortness of breath. BP’s 160 over 90.”

“What’s his name?” Kerry asked as she pulled her stethoscope from around her neck and pressed it to the man’s chest.

    “Lou.”

“Lou, I’m Dr. Weaver. Are you having any chest pains?

“A little and my arm hurts.”

“Are you on any medications for your blood pressure?”

“Yeah, it’s a little white pill. I’m not sure what it’s called.”

Kerry took in his words, but was quickly becoming distracted by the approaching figure. She was wearing a tailored cream-colored suit. Her blond curls were a little shorter, but other than that she looked just as she had when she told Kerry to go back to her life five years earlier, though she seemed to have a hint of a smile now instead of an “if looks could kill you would have just experienced spontaneous combustion” expression.

“Dr. Weaver?” Abby’s voice brought her back to the patient.

“Let’s get him inside.” And Dr. Kim Legaspi heard Kerry name off a litany of tests and treatments for the patient as she watched her former lover guide the gurney through the ER doors.
